Description
We require Tour Guides/Deckhands for this season!
You will have the most varied role on the barge which may involve all kinds of unexpected and exciting challenges day or night. This role requires you to be a dynamic and flexible individual who can use your initiative to solve problems.
In return the job will be exciting, challenging and rewarding. The job of the deckhand during navigation mostly consists of working with the pilot in securing the boat through locks, and mooring. It will require a certain amount of rope work, and lifting and carrying potentially heavy items such as gangplanks.
You will need to be sensitive and quick to respond to any hazards on and around the boat, (slippery decks, overhanging branches, fire, collision, etc.) The deckhand will also assume co-responsibility alongside the Pilot for the care, maintenance, and cleaning of the outside of the barge. Particular attention is paid to the arrival of the guests on Sunday, when the boat should look immaculate with windows cleaned and brass polished. Keeping a beautiful barge looking good is something to be proud of, and this side of the job can be very rewarding. By the end of the season you will have met a good range of interesting people, built up good relationships and even friendships.
The tour guide is the principle driver in the team, and must take this responsibility very seriously. As driver you will also take responsibility for the good maintenance of the minibus. You will have to be very patient, use mirrors, and resist all temptation to drive too fast. The tour guide needs to have a sense of humour on top of everything else.
Requirements
No previous experience is required for the post of Deckhand although a genuine interest, and some experience in boating, is an advantage.
As a tour guide you will spend considerable time with the guests and build up relations with them over the week.
For this you will need to be friendly, communicative and presentable.
The tour guide must also have a genuine interest in the region, and the subjects of the visits, such as history, wine, and agriculture. You should have an engaging personality and a good sense of humour is a must. In order to fulfil these roles in France a certain level of French is a criteria of employment for this post.
A full clean driving licence is also essential
